About NY State Defensive Driving Course

Defensive Driving course in NY state is also known as The Point and Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP) or Motor Vehicle Accident Prevention Course. The online format of the course is known as I-PIRP: an acronym for the Internet Point & Insurance Reduction Program.

It is a very detailed course on driver safety that teaches techniques for safe and lawful driving. Many private companies and organizations around the state offer this course but to receive point and insurance reduction benefits the course provider must be New York State(NYS) DMV approved.

How Does It Work?

  1. Check If You Qualify
    For Insurance Reduction benefit, call your car insurance provider and verify with an agent that you will receive an insurance reduction after completion of Defensive Driving Course. For DMV points reduction, contact DMV to verify how many points will be reduced on your driving record after the course completion.
  2. Complete Defensive Driving Course
    Choose your course provider and complete defensive driving. You have 30 days to finish it.
  3. Activate Benefits
    Send your Defensive Driving Certificate to your car insurance provider to activate the insurance reduction discount. Please, talk to your insurance agent for details on where to send the certificate.
    For DMV points reduction, you don't have to do anything. After you successfully complete the defensive driving course, your test results will be automatically reported to your local DMV.

How to Pass The Course Quiz Questions?

All courses that we recommended have easy and intuitive quiz questions and no final exam at the end of the course. You'll need to answer at least 75% of questions correctly. If you fail on the first attempt, you can try again. You'll have 3 attempts to pass for each quiz. How Often Can I Take the Defensive Driving Course?

Reducing up to 4 points from your driving record can be done once in any 18-month period. It can help you not to lose your driver's license if you accrued 11 or more points on your driving record.

If you took a defensive driving course in the past but are not certain when you did it, you can request your driver's record using NYS DMV Records Navigator. You will have 5 days after you order your driving record to download it online. The NYS DMV processing fee for ordering your driving record is $7. If you don't have MyDMV account, you will need your most recent New York State driver's license, permit, or non-driver ID in order to create one.

Activating a 10% insurance discount from the base rate on your auto and motorcycle insurance premiums can be done once every 36 months. To activate the Insurance Discount, you'll need to send a copy of your defensive driving certificate to your car insurance provider. Contact your insurance agent for more details on where to send the certificate.
