NY Defensive Driving FAQs
What is the I-PIRP/ADM Program?
I-PIRP/ADM stands for Internet Point & Insurance Reduction Program / Alternate Delivery Method. I-PIRP is often referred to by New Yorkers as Defensive Driving course. This program allows DMV-approved sponsors to provide Defensive Driving (Accident Prevention) courses via the Internet or other alternate delivery methods, such as DVD or digital cable.
Who offers the I-PIRP courses?
Only courses approved by the New York State DMV qualify for point and insurance reduction. I DRIVE SAFELY, LLC is the DMV approved Defensive Driving course (I-PIRP sponsor) that we recommend.
Do I receive both point and insurance reduction for taking an I-PIRP course?
Yes. Successfully completing an I-PIRP or a classroom PIRP course provides the same benefits:
- A reduction of up to 4 points on your driving record, and
- A 10% discount on your liability and collision insurance premiums.
In what formats the defensive driving course is available?
Defensive Driving is available in several formats to accommodate different learning preferences:
- Online Courses: I-PIRP (Online Defensive Driving). This program allows to study at your own pace from any location with internet access. Must be finished within 30 days after registration.
- In-Person Classes: You'll need to attend a full day classroom session or two half-day sessions led by a certified instructor.
What are requirements before taking the course?
- For 4 Points Reduction: Can only be received once in any 18‑month period. Reduction can only apply to the violations prior to the defensive driving class. It can NOT be used for the future violations. "Point reduction" means that points for all your violations will still show on your DMV driving record, but during total points calculation, 4 points will be subtracted from the total count which may help you to avoid a suspension.
- For 10% Auto Insurance Discount: You must take the course once every 36 months to maintain insurance reduction benefits.
Can I take NY Devensive Driving for points reduction if I hold Commercial Drivers License(CDL)?
Yes. Taking NY Defensive Driving course for the purpose of reducing points on your DMV driving record is good for all driver license types in New York State.
How long does the I-PIRP course take?
The course includes a minimum of 320 minutes (5 hours and 20 minutes) of instruction time. This does not include time for registration, identity verification, or testing. Course platforms use timers and controls to ensure the required instruction time is met.
How does the I-PIRP course compare to the classroom version?
Both courses have very similar content, information, and instruction time (320 minutes).
- The classroom course is given in one full-day session or two evening sessions.
- The I-PIRP course can be taken from home at your own pace, but must be completed within 30 days of registration.
Can I log in and out, or use different devices to take the course?
Yes. You can complete the course in multiple sessions and use different devices—as long as you finish within 30 calendar days.
Most providers assign you a user ID and password to log in from any internet-connected device.
Does I-PIRP course have any tests or a final exam in it?
Many defensive driving course providers in NY don't have final exam, but they ask quiz questions at the end of each chapter.
Course may also include identity verification questions: personal security questions or biometric checks.
What happens if I fail a quiz or a final exam?
If you fail to answer a 75% of quiz questions correctly on the first try, don't worry! You'll get a second chance to pass. You will have the opportunity to go back and review the chapter before taking the quiz again. You can take any chapter quiz up to 3 times to pass.
The test, the exam process, and the effect of results can vary by sponser. Carefully read the information about tests before you register for the course.
Can I request a refund for my course?
Refund policy varies by sponsor. Most of them offer a money back guarantee if you changed your mind about the course. Refund must be requested within thirty (30) days of purchase and a completion certificate has NOT been issued. Check with your course provider for more details.
How much does an I-PIRP course cost?
Fees are set by each course provider and may vary. The price will be clearly listed before you register. Shop around and compare providers for the best value.
How do I pay for the defensive driving course?
Most providers accept credit card payments, but payment methods may vary.
If the sponsor cancels or cannot deliver the course, you must be offered either:
- A full refund, or
- The opportunity to reschedule or restart the course when it is available.

Additionally, they must mail the course completion certificate to you by regular mail within 14 business days from the course completion date. Some may offer express mail delivery options at an additional fee.
Will my course completion be reported to DMV?

Is my certificate of completion sent to my automobile insurance company?
No. You must provide the completion certificate to your insurance provider for insurance reduction benefits.
Are I-PIRP websites secure?
Yes. The DMV requires sponsors to use secure websites that protect your personal data and privacy.
What personal information is required to take the course?
The sponsors collect personal information to verify your identity and your participation. This can include identity information such as the DMV ID Number (Client ID Number) from your NY State driver license, your name, and date of birth. Make sure to use your name exactly as it appears on your New York State Driver License (don't use “nick names”). The sponsor will also collect credit card information for the course fee. Under the I-PIRP requirements, your personal information must be protected.
Identification and participation information can also include biometrics like keystrokes, facial recognition or voice recognition.
Is my personal information stored after the course?
Yes. Sponsors must store your data on secure servers for a period required by the DMV. You can view each sponsor's privacy policy for more details.
How do sponsors verify that the person taking the course is the same as the person registered?
Each sponsor has verification methods in place (keystrokes biometrics, facial recognition, or voice recognition) to ensure that the person registered is completing the course. Attempting to commit fraud by having someone else take the course is a crime and may result in fines or prosecution.
IMPORTANT: If you do not have a New York State DMV ID/Client ID Number from your NY State driver license, the course completion cannot be applied to your license record.
You may have to file Request for Driver and/or Vehicle Record Information form (PDF) (MV-15) before you attempt to take an ADM course.
